New Testament Assembly Spanish Town
About Us
History
The concept of Spanish Town NTA was the brainchild of the late Reverend Kenneth Holgate and Reverend Carmen McLeggon—a community mother who possessed a passion to win the lost at any cost.
In October 1972, the first Sunday School Class was held on Reverend McLeggon’s verandah. Prayer Meetings quickly became a part of the program and by 1973 a board edifice was erected in the front yard of Rev. McLeggon’s home. Three weeks of crusade saw thirty mostly young people baptized who became the foundation members. The wife of Pastor Kenneth Holgate, Adelle (Sonia) Holgate, was the first member. It quickly became known as “the Blue Church”—a place of fellowship and deliverance for the community whether saved or unsaved.
By 1975, the membership grew to fifty, and through much sacrifice they purchased the land on which the current Church stands. The great hunger for God at that time resulted in the Church being opened every night, with members committed to absolute fasts, and with much zeal they did house-to-house visits each Sunday evening.
Coming from red board floors, banjos, tambourines, cymbals, and sticks as instruments, the sound of these makeshift instruments drew the community to find refuge in a place where they felt the compassion of its Pastor and members. Today, Spanish Town NTA is adequately tiled and equipped with a sound system, with a membership of approximately seventy members.
Today we stand in the legacy of a thought that is continually manifesting into a place of comfort, healing, and salvation for many. It remains a place of rescue for the community—a true beacon of hope and faith.
Following the passing of Reverend Carmen McLeggon, leadership was carried forward by Bishop Pearl Jones, who served faithfully from 2003 to November 2009. Reverend Bruce Farrell then pastored the congregation from November 2009 until June 2025, continuing to build upon the strong foundation laid before him.
Today, Reverend Shernett Foster-Murdock—a devoted disciple of Reverend McLeggon—serves as our current Pastor. Her leadership stands as a living testament to the powerful legacy of faith, service, and vision that continues to shape our ministry. As we honor the past, we remain steadfast in our commitment to the future, guided by the same unwavering spirit that has carried us through generations.
