In November 1950, three young preachers — Barclay, Cascoe, and Farrell — interns at the Jamaica School for the Blind, journeyed to Hamilton Mountain for a fundraising concert. Their ministry stirred hearts and drew the attention of the local Baptist leadership, who invited them to return for a Watch Night service and two weeks of evangelistic meetings in the New Year.
In the second week of the meetings a revival sparked, leading many to surrender their lives to Christ. This spiritual awakening disrupted long-held traditions, causing tension with the Baptist leadership, who asked the preachers to cease their ministry.
Undeterred, the trio moved their services into the streets, until a local shop owner offered them an empty building. Makeshift benches and a platform were fashioned from shelves and counters, marking the humble beginnings of a new worship space. As attendance grew, the preachers leased a lot to set up a temporary structure. With unity and enthusiasm, the community members assisted in building a large thatch booth in preparation for the first baptism service. On Easter Sunday 1951, seven believers became the first members.
In the ensuing months, doctrinal differences emerged between the young preachers. The congregation affirmed Farrell’s vision, aligning with a more spiritually dynamic framework. Brothers Barclay and Cascoe parted ways with Farrell, who embraced the principles of the Church of God. The division was painful, but the church endured, led by John Farrell and anchored in the belief that God’s hand was upon the work.
In 1954, while considering merging with the Church of God, Farrell was approached by a group of ministers who were on their way out of that organization. Sharing a common vision, they agreed to collaborate to form a new organization that would not only reflect their stance but one that was spirit-led and Bible-believing. This new organization was called the New Testament Assembly.
The Move of God – MZU
In the early months of 1965, the church experienced a profound and unmistakable move of God. It was not merely a revival; it was a supernatural visitation marked by the power and presence of the Holy Ghost. Signs, wonders, and miracles unfolded among us, and the Spirit spoke clearly through anointed vessels and prophetic voices. What was witnessed was the mystery of God in operation. At first, some dismissed it as fanaticism, but as the manifestations continued, hearts were stirred and understanding deepened. This was not emotionalism—it was a heaven-sent move, orchestrated by the Spirit Himself.
During this sacred season, the Holy Spirit gave the church a name—Mount Zion University (MZU), describing it as a “centrifugal force” radiating outward from the center to touch lives far beyond its walls. This name carried a divine mandate. MZU was not just a place—it was a movement. A spiritual institution birthed by God, where His mysteries were taught, His power demonstrated, and His people equipped for greater works. The church became a center of spiritual instruction, revelation, and empowerment.
Over the past seventy-four years, we have had many mountain and valley experiences and have weathered many storms. We have experienced massive migrations both locally and internationally, which have seriously impacted our numbers. However, we are resolute, and by God’s grace we will continue in the fight. In 2026 we will be celebrating 75 years since our inception. With gratitude we raise our Ebenezer, “hitherto hath the Lord helped us.”
